Water Smarts

August 13th, 2010 by admin Leave a reply »

leaf Water is a resource that is becoming more and more of a concern for lack of it, or how tainted it is with chemicals…

This is another resource I absolutely love – National Geographic’s  The Green Guide. Wonderful information and educational tidbits.

For instance, are you aware of how much water is used for our food? It’s not so much of what we use personally in our home (although that does contribute some) – but for food processing!

Here is a informative and fun quiz to take to see what your general H2O usage is, and what you can decrease in use to conserve more.

Watch this video- it’s an eyeful! It will REALLY get you thinking about the food you eat and how it’s processed, not to mention the chemicals used . I think I am going to look into growing my own garden now for sure .

  1. Hi Lesly,
And there I was thinking I was careful with water! We do a lot at home to conserve water, but the amount of water used in the process of getting the goods to the supermarket is astounding..

    Thanks for the info.

  2. Thank you for sharing that Lesly, I never realized how much water is really used to cleaning our food before we get it. This really makes you think about how much we are all using everyday.

Hey Lesly, Great post. I calculated my results to be about 1300. We all need some awareness and accountability for this in our lives.

    Make it a great day!

What a great post, amazing information I enjoyed the quiz so much I sent the link out to my mailing list. This is something so few people think about we really need to spread the word.

  5. Lesly,
I am very often amazed at the volume of very relevant information that I don’t know. Thank you for the new education.
As I watched the video and did the quiz, I was surprised to learn all the ways a huge abundance of our water is used for things I would not have thought of.
Thanks for making us more aware and ready to do our part to conserve our water in this great post!

  8. My Score was 2,683

I’m surprised the average for the U.S. is lower than that. I was way below average in every category except for transportation. I guess it didn’t like how much I fly in an airplane! :(

Fun quiz! Thanks for the blog post Lesly!

  9. Hi Lesly,
I took the quiz and my score was 1406. And I can’t imagine using less! Thanks for this unique post…very informative.

I did really well on the quiz except for one thing … we don’t have a car, nor do we fly anywhere yet I was given a score of 969 for transportation compared to the average of 700. No idea why that would happen.

Wow – this was an eye opener Lesly! Thanks for the info! I didn’t fair too well in the green test – need to look into that. Great info!

  12. Lesly, Thanks for sharing this video. I will now think twice before buy any loose leaves or neatly packaged cut vegetables. I’ll stick to the whole vegetables, with dirt still on them. Not ready to start my own garden although there’s nothing like your own fresh veges.

  13. Thanks Lesly,

  15. Thanks for the article Lesly. I always look at things on the positive side and I expect the processors to do their jobs and provide quality potable water.

  16. Lesly,
As always giving us “food for thought” ! I use a great water filter in my home by Aquasana, but never really thought about what kind of water is used in food processing. Oy! Don’t know that I’ll be growing my own though. Have to stick to the farmers markets I guess.

  17. Lesly,
This is pretty scary information. I buy 98% of all fruits and veggies at a local fruit stand. Most of the veggies still have dirt on them. It is comforting to know that they have not been run through a food processing plant. I’d love to have my own garden, though. That’s the safest way to get good quality produce.

yes Darlene, that’s the best way, I am guessing most vegetables in supermarkets are treated this way … just something to be aware of
